Francine Blum, a former investment researcher turned entrepreneur, has been shaking up the dog coat business.
Her company, MountainMuttDogCoats Boulder, aims to provide a higher quality garment for dogs while bringing attention to canine cancer. MountainMuttDogCoats Boulder’s dog coats cost $145 to $165. We sat down with Blum to ask her about the business.
How did you come up with the idea of MountainMuttDogCoats Boulder?
My dog Mac was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2009. He was shaved for surgery that very cold and snowy year. We looked for a warm coat and couldn’t fine one that fit well. They weren’t designed for his unusual body shape.
I was able to have a leather coat custom-made for him by someone who made custom motorcycle gear. We lined it with fleece and that became our prototype coat the following year. I saw there was a market for high-end, quality dog coats.
